Minecraft Sold 15 Million Copies in 2012

Minecraft City

We’ve had plenty of posts about Minecraft’s continuous stream of high sales, but now we have a solid figure for the whole of 2012. It turns out the Mojang’s open-world building game sold more than 15 million copies throughout the year. Games that sell over a million copies are generally considered to be a success, so shifting over 15 million in a single year must be putting a massive smile on the faces of Notch and co.

Strangely enough, the Pocket Edition sold the most, with 5.9 million across iOS and Android. This is strange as it’s the most basic of all versions, slowly adding in features that have been around for a while on PC. The Xbox 360 version is next, with just over 5 million sold. The Xbox 360 version is solid, and quickly catching up to its PC counterpart, but still doesn’t have quite the feature set as the PC version, which moved 4.2 million copies. While the PC version is definitely the best one (especially when you start adding on custom-built modifications), this version has been around for a lot longer, so it makes sense that sales would start to drop.

Whichever version you’ve picked up (or all three, like some of us), there’s no denying that you have one of the best games of the last few years. Some may not understand Minecraft’s slow pace and lack of real direction, but those who’ve spent long hours collecting those elusive ores and building their dream homes will understand why the game is still doing so well.
