You knew that a new Tomb Raider was going to happen at some point but it’s still nice to hear confirmation anyway. The announcement itself comes directly from Square Enix CEO, Phil Rogers in an open letter posted on the site.
Square Enix is in production with a number of next generation projects, including Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III, which were announced at this year’s E3, and Thief coming in 2014. I am also excited to reveal that we are well into development on a next-generation Tomb Raider sequel – something you may have heard about recently!
We did hear not too long ago that Square Enix wasn’t satisfied with Tomb Raider sales despite it selling over 3.4 million in it’s first month. This somewhat cast some doubt as to what Square Enix might do with the series but it seems that they’re going to continue through with development of a new Tomb Raider for the next-generation platforms.
In Brad’s review of Tomb Raider it was clear that he loved it and I myself checked it out not too long ago. It would of been nice if the game were less shooter and contained more puzzles (namely TOMBS TO RAID) but overall it’s still one of my favourite titles from the generation. I had a great time with Tomb Raider and I can’t wait to see what a new one would look like.
If you’ve not yet tried out Tomb Raider then what the hell are you waiting for? You can find it on Amazon for just under £20 which is a total steal. Here’s a trailer to remind you of what you’re missing out on.
Update
Shortly after this post went up, I managed to find a little more detail from the official Tomb Raider Tumblr page.
“Hi - you may have read today that a next-generation sequel to Tomb Raider is in the works. We’re very excited to confirm that the team has started working on telling the next chapter in Lara’s tale. It’s still early days, so I’m afraid I can’t provide any further details for now save my assurance that we’re not resting on our laurels and acclaim from Tomb Raider’s recent successes, but working hard to raise the bar even higher and re-affirm the faith you’ve shown.”
Basically they’re not getting cocky and hope to make an even better game. Sweet, bring it on!
