Looks like Nintendo have got to take the rough with the smooth as we make our way into the new year. On the plus side, Nintendo has become profitable during the first nine months of the 2012 / 2013 fiscal season. Their profit for this period was ¥14.5 billion (~$160 million), which may a little less than they were hoping for, and certainly less than they were making a few years ago, but at least things are looking up.
Unfortunately, it seems as though neither the Wii U or 3DS are going to hit their sales targets for the period, prompting Nintendo to lower their expectations. The Wii was originally supposed to sell 5.5 million units by March, but with only 3.06 million having sold so far, they’ve lowered their target to 4 million. The 3DS is also lagging behind a little, only selling 12.71 million with a target of 17.5 million. This target has also been lowered, and now stands at 15 million.
Although the 3DS took longer to build steam than the DS, it’s on the way now, and with many folks still waiting for some Wii U killer software, it’s understandable that Nintendo’s sales are dropping a little. I think their sudden return to profitability should be the main thing to focus on, as I have a feeling that they’ll be hitting their targets before long.
