Grand Theft Auto Online Might Include Microtransactions

A data file found by a user on Reddit has hinted at downloadable “cash cards” being available for purchase from in the in-game store.

This thread explains how the user found the file and examined the contents, and offers it as an explanation as to why making money in Grand Theft Auto V can be a bit of a challenge.

An extract from the file seems to prove the existence of game-cash for real-cash:

Cash is king in this town. Solve your money problems and help get what you want across Los Santos and Blaine County with the purchase of cash packs for Grand Theft Auto Online. All purchased cash is automatically deposited into your character’s bank account. Spend wisely, cash therapy is fleeting.

The files have been found on some of Rockstars servers, and come complete with some images (scroll down for those) courtesy of NeoGaf.

One of the comments calls the move “very un-Rockstar’y” which is true. This would be a new move for Rockstar, but DLC isn’t and the amount of content they have offered for download has increased dramatically since the two expansions for Grand Theft Auto IV.

I don’t find the inclusion of microtransactions too surpsiring, Rockstar are in the business of making games and part of that business is making money. Grand Theft Auto V is their most successful outing yet, making over $1 Billion in it’s first few days. So they’ve made a few bucks already.

It’s worth baring in mind that none of this is official and as yet there isn’t any comment from Rockstar.

Grand Theft Auto Online launches on the 1st of October and we’ll have a preview/review-that-isn’t-a-review as soon as possible.
