In what is the most exciting bit of news since the PS4, Nintendo have recently renewed the Eternal Darkness trademark. Either Nintendo simply wants to hold on to the IP or hopefully are planning on a sequel sometime in the future. Could this be Retro Studio’s secret game? Can we expect a new Eternal Darkness game at E3? The suspense is killing me.
The original Eternal Darkness was developed by Silicon Knights for the Nintendo 64, somewhere along the way the game was moved over to the GameCube. Upon release the game enjoyed a positive reception from fans and critics alike and it’s sanity effects system has gone on to become a legendary feature within the industry. As the sanity meter drops, your character starts to hallucinate and it basically gives the game a perfect excuse to play all sorts of trick with you, it wasn’t afraid to break the fourth wall either.
Malvingt2 of NeoGAF was the one who discovered the recent trademark renewal, the filling date is December 20th 2012 so it’s not all that long ago. It’s rather interesting as Silicon Knights and Nintendo had a bit of a falling out after Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes, Too Human ended up being an Xbox 360 title and a really bad one at that. Silicon Knights followed it up with X-Men Destiny which was even worse and the developer has had all sorts of legal troubles with Epic Games.
Is an Eternal Darkness sequel possible? Would Silicon Knights develop it or has Nintendo taken matters to it’s own hands? Could we be looking too much into this simple trademark renewal?
All I know for sure is that Eternal Darkness was one of my favourite games from it’s generation, the Wii U GamePad and the sanity effects seem like a match made in heaven. Nintendo, make it happen.
